Bodegas y Viñedos Diez Mérito is an artisan family bodega whose origins date back to 1876 when Don Salvador Diez y Pérez Múñoz founded the firm Diez Hermanos.
Having passed through the hands of the big groups Rumasa and Paternina, the firm was acquired in March 2016 by a local Jerez family, the Espinosas, who restored to the bodegas their own individual identity and returned them to their roots in Jerez.
The soleras and criaderas for this brandy date from 1819. It is made from selected holandas aged oxidatively in American oak butts for more than 15 years by the traditional system used in Jerez of soleras and criaderas. These butts have been previously seasoned with Oloroso Sherry for at least 10 years.
The oxidative ageing process in butt transforms the holandas into a brandy with distinct organoleptic characteristics. It is clean with a deep recently varnished oak colour. On the nose it is subtly aromatic with notes of vanilla and dried fruits while on the palate it is full of flavour and classic Jerez character with a harmonious balance between vanilla, dried fruits, traces of oak and the spirit itself with a long satisfying finish.
Best served after a meal at about 10ᴼC in a balloon glass, or alternatively in a shot glass at 0ᴼC which offers a great unfussy modern take on the digestive.
This brandy can also match food: try it cold with goat’s cheese or blue cheese for an explosion of flavours.
